The network shall be NMEA2000 and compatible vendor versions. Currently, actually just Raymarine Seatalk ng.
Starting at the rear of the quarterberth at one end of the bus, I have
Garmin chartplotter (NMEA spur to STNG hub via adapter cable) EV-1 sensor Wheel pilot ACU Thence by STNG bus with NMEA adapter to main panel. Behind the electrical panel, I have an NMEA 2000 hub, with:
Sci-tex AIS Yacht Devices YDWG Yacht Devices YDRI Raspberry Pi running Signalk, Influxdb and Graphna Also, via NMEA / STNG adapter:
As mentioned, a p70S for autopilot and an i70s for wind and water.
If you look carefully, you'll see the autopilot status is 'standby', not 'no pilot'. The instrument does see the autopilot and can command it to move! Can't wait to try that for real!
I love the idea of SOK LiFePO4 batteries: use automotive grade prismatic cells in a resealable plastic case and permit DIY repairs and upgrades. There's an active user community on (ugh) Facebook, but not a wealth of documentation from manufacturer or the community. My chance to pay it forward.
Having settled on a mixed-chemistry battery complement, selected new LiFePO4 batteries for the house bank and the various chargers and meters, the time comes to configure all the devices for charging and monitoring battery performance. Since no 2 of the components are from the same manufacturer, this is not a matter of referring to some standard support document, or even getting well-considered advice from knowlegable users. Herewith, the charger configuration I'm using, and a bit of justification for those choices.
Swap out AGM house battery for LiPO batteries, an inverter charger and solar. This will let me have an induction plate (to replace alchohol stove), a microwave (for heating bachelor chow) and maybe refrigeration. Keep it under $4,000, so I have something left over for canvas.
Projects for 2021
Off Beat is my new old boat, an Island Packet 27 built in 1987. It's a sturdy, slow and comfortable sailboat and
should satisfy my nautical yearnings for some time now.
It needs some work before I can go far in it.
The south east coast is not a particularly great cruising ground. Where else will I go?
